The research, published in the journal Azania: Archaeological Research in Africa in May 2016, highlighted that the bone tools were used for hunting, and even as poison arrow tips in eastern Africa over 13000 years ago.

These bone artefacts were discovered in the Kuumbi Cave in Zanzibar.

About Kuumbi Cave
• Kuumbi Cave is one of a group of caves that underlie a flight of marine terraces in Pleistocene limestone in eastern Zanzibar.
• These caves are archaeological sites that include bones, stone tools, ceramics and many other cultural materials.
• The caves are extensively decorated with lime stone formations.
• The animal life of the cave includes a large population of bats, fresh water birds and tropical birds.
• These caves were used by slave traders as hiding places after the trade was made illegal.
• These caves are still used today for religious purposes but also for water supply to the village.
